The first gay feature to hail from mainland China offers rare insight into a
world where the only life a gay man can lead is one of furtive dalliances at
public toilets, the site of routine police raids. Directed by the celebrated
(and blacklisted) Zhang Yuan, EAST PALACE, WEST PALACE is a mesmerizing
character drama about a defiantly bold young writer, A-Lan, and the handsome
interrogation officer who arrests him for cruising in a local park. When ordered
to explain his "deviant" behavior during an all-night interrogation,
A-Lan regales the cop, to whom he is intensely attracted, with provocative tales
of his childhood, sexual awakening, and incessant searching for love.
Beautifully photographed and skillfully executed, EAST PALACE, WEST PALACE is a
historic film not to be missed.
