In celebration of Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month, the Japanese American National Museum presents a panel of experts to discuss the historical, political, religious and legal implications of the debate on equal marriage rights for lesbians and gay men.
Presenters will include: - Award-winning author/activist Helen Zia, who in 2004 married her long-time partner in San Francisco - Reverend Mark M. Nakagawa, senior minister of Centenary United Methodist Church in Little Tokyo - Actor James Sie, who has been raising a son with his partner of 17 years, Doug Wood - Attorney Karin Wang of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center - With welcoming remarks from George Takei*, Chair Emeritus of the JANM Board of Trustees
Reception will follow immediately. This program is free and open to the public.
At 6pm, Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT) will hold a press conference to unveil a new public service announcement, "The Banyan Tree Project: Combating HIV and AIDS stigma in the API community."
