OUTFEST @ THE VILLAGE PRESENTS...
A Celebration of Black History Month beginning on Thursday, February 4th at 7pm at the
Village with the presentation of:
DAKAN
DIR: Mohammed Camara, 1997, Guinea, 35mm on video, 87 min.
The first sub-Saharan African film to address male homosexuality, DAKAN
recounts the emotional love story of two men who have been in love since
they were schoolboys. When Manga tells his mother he is attracted to a
boy, she insists, "Boys dont do that...since time began, it has never
happened." Soris father, a prominent businessman, does everything in
his power to keep the two apart. Societal pressures eventually work
their way into the intimate lives of the two boys as they grow to
manhood, but their romantic bond remains deeply intact. An official
selection of the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, and winner of the Grand Jury
Award for Best Foreign Feature at OUTFEST 98,
DAKAN provides an honest an rarely-glimpsed perspective into Guinean
society.
