December 2000   Newsletter of CRA - A Gay Chinese Organization in Los Angeles   Volume 5  Issue 12

From the Chair

Our November monthly social was once again special, as it had an art show of original Chinese paintings. Attendees to the show/party hails (originally) from 9 (!) countries or locales: China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, Hawaii, the U.S. Mainland, the Philippines, and Moldova. We enjoyed the art work, the food, the view, the music, and most of all the camaraderie/bonding. So much so that some quests stayed beyond 11 pm. The Imperial court's Coronation @ the Radisson Wilshire grand ball room was a BALL!

The Imperial Court's Coronation was a 6-hour extravaganza held during the Thanksgiving weekend. Hundreds of GLBT's and gay-friendly quests attended; many G and L organizations represented. Dignitaries came included councilmen Joel Wachs (who is running for L.A. Mayor position) and Heilmna. The CRA dancers did three Asian dance numbers amid great responses. CRA was officially recognized, and yours truly and board member Harris were presented with the Court's pins by the emperor and the empress. The following day, CRA received the award trophy for "Best Organizational Presentation." (A review of this event with photos will appear in the January issue of our Rainbow News.)

The next big event is the Best Male Exotic Dance Contest on Sat Dec 9. It is going to be a hot, hot, hot one. No one should miss it. Best and sexy dancers from near and far of all ethnicities will be competing for audience's applause and cash prizes, vacation trips, and even dance contracts. It is also a fund-raising function that donates to Asian AIDS services. So it is also a good cause we all should support. I will see all you tongzhis there.

This is the appropriate time to reflect on the happenings of this past year. While I will not list everything (please see our next issue) with CRA and its members, I do want to thank all members for your attendance and support. During the year, some members lost their jobs, other their lovers or loved ones, many fellow tongzhis were there to comfort and help. Thankfully they have all weathered the storms and are back on their feet.

I must sincerely thank my board members for their hard work, dedication and emotional support . Without whose help, CRA would not have been able to survive and thrive.

This year, we saw a great increase of new members and friends. CRA will only get bigger and better next year. Do have a fab, GAY and safe holiday season!

Respectfully,

Andre'
