May/June 2002   Newsletter of CRA - A Gay Chinese Organization in Los Angeles   Volume 7  Issue 5-6

Notes from Chair

"What a pleasure it is to welcome friends from afar", says Confucius.  At our April and May socials, I was happy to see a lot of new as well as familiar faces. Some of these familiar faces had disappeared for quite some time, so it was really nice to see them again.

I hope that those of you who are new to CRA will continue to come to our social. We may not always have fancy party themes or political agenda, but what we offer is a cozy, supportive environment for everyone, particularly for ethic Chinese, a place to meet up with old friends and making new friends.

Having come from New York (and Singapore before that), I find Los Angeles’s culture quite different in terms of how people interact. Since this is a driving city, one tends to see more cars than people. There are few chances of meeting people.  This is compounded by the fact that we all live miles apart, so it takes effort to arrange and meet up. This is one of the reasons we keep the monthly social going.  April social was exceedingly well attended (thank you Jerry for hosting it), and the May social was quite good too considering it was the Memorial Day weekend.

So rest assured, if you attend our socials, you are bound to see some familiar faces, friends that you don't see often enough, whether by choice or otherwise. And now, an important reminder.

June is the CSW month and CRA will join other organizations at the API Pavilion to do public outreach, as well as participate in the festival.  It is important to show our visibility as a minority group within a larger minority, in this annual event which brings together all the various elements of our greater community. Please do join us to celebrate this meaningful occasion.  Come out to watch or join the parade and visit the API Pavilion.

We need your support.
