May/June 2003   Newsletter of CRA - A Gay Chinese Organization in Los Angeles   Volume 8  Issue 5/6

FROM THE CHAIR

Dear fellow tongzhis:

Last month (June) we had a great Gay Pride event. CRA marchers with regular and new marching items (lanterns, fans, streamers, etc.) walked with other API contingents, and from the comments of the spectators, we were colorful, festive, and distinctive. Thank you to the organizers of the march: Charles, Andy, Tony, and Howard.  In the festival, we shared a large booth (the API  Pavilion) with other API  groups and had a good display and plenty of exposure, recruiting,  and networking. Our old newsletters were popular with some new visitors, who took them home, and 20 of whom signed up on our new mailing list.

July is Outfest month. This film festival is the largest tongzhi film fest in the world. CRA is collaborating on the new Chinese film "Old Testament" (Jui Yue). As early as June, all tickets to the three screenings of  this show were sold out. Perhaps we can show it in one of our upcoming events.

Our July potluck should be another fun social party on Saturday July 26. Please check out our website for directions to the party. Some people like after-dinner activities like karaoke, games, movies, etc. They want something more than just a dinner and they can hang around longer. Other prefer only food and talking, just socializing and meeting friends. Do you personally like fun activities with lots of laughter, or good food and quiet conversation? Please let us know.

Also, some people work on Saturdays and prefer Sunday gatherings. After all, after work, they have to go home, take a shower, get dressed and groomed, cook or buy food, drive (maybe pick up  a friend), locate the party venue, find a place to park, etc. It is time-consuming, and that's why many people arrive late for Saturday parties, we presume. Of course, we don't mind,  but I do want the board members to arrive on time for the board meetings, at an hour prior to an event, so we can have a serious and constructive business meeting and prepare for the parties before the arrivals of the first guests. If you wish to help out or be a future board-of-directors member, please come at 6 pm on July 26. We are constantly looking for energetic, caring, and dedicated tongzhis to include on our board. Your contributions will be greatly appreciated by all. An organization is only as good and responsive as the leaders who organize the activities.

August is a hot month, and we are looking forward  to an outdoor party.  If your know of a good site, please let any board members know ASAP. Thank you very much.

Have a great summer!
