National Freedom to Marry Day '99: Join the Growing List of Events, Actions, Forums

Dear Student Organizers and Community Leaders --

By now you have heard about National Freedom to Marry Day (2/12), an opportunity to redouble efforts to educate and enlist non-gay people across the country in support of gay people's equal marriage rights.

This is a terrific way for students and campuses to lead the way; we hope you will seize the opportunity to:

A) target non-gay leaders, groups, clergy, faculty, opinion-makers, media, etc., and go ask them to learn about, and support, our families and our equality -- or, at least, oppose discrimination (such as anti-marriage bills in state legislatures or ballot measures such as the one in California)

B) stage an event that generates public discussion and outreach on National Freedom to Marry Day itself (capitalizing on Lincoln's Birthday and Valentine's Day to reinforce our message of love and equality).

-- a great example was last weekend's wedding ceremony of a lesbian couple in Sacramento, celebrated by nearly 90 clergy from around the country as a gesture of support for their love and civil rights

C) use the coalition you assemble to pull this together to go past NFMD itself to mount a concerted campaign, week by week, of approaching and educating ever new reachable groups and leaders in every community.

Please contact Christopher Calhoun (LAFTMC@aol.com), our NFMD coordinator, Lambda (LLDEFMARRY@aol.com), or any of the other national and local non-gay and gay members of the National Freedom to Marry Coalition to get resources, ideas, and support for your actions. If you didn't receive the earlier NFMD materials, ask Christopher to send them to you.

Students, campuses, and religious and community groups can really help educate this country through dialogue, preparing us to be ready to build on the breakthrough win we hope to see this year.

Thanks!
